They suggest this 'long, thin, sloping zone' is filled with unusually warm material and forms parts of a mantle plume that stretches all the way from Mexico. The researchers calculated that the mantle is hotter than any of its surroundings, reaching temperatures of around 600 to 800 degree Celsius (1,100-1,450°F).
